A California cat has gone viral for a facial feature admirers say bears a hilarious resemblance to the moustache worn by iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the ’80s.
The aptly named feline, Mostaccioli, proudly boasts a streak of black fur between her mouth and nose, giving the impression of a neatly trimmed moustache.
Mostaccioli continues to attract followers on Instagram alongside her adopted sibling Izanami.
The pair’s owner, Natalie, works at a veterinarian’s office. She found Mostaccioli among a litter of stray kittens in her mother’s garden in August of 2020. The mother and four kittens appeared malnourished when they were brought in for treatment and nursed back to health.
Natalie found homes for Mostaccioli’s three brothers and adopted Mostaccioli into her own family. She says the kitty’s moustache has grown more apparent over time and her followers have often compared the cat to Mercury or even Super Mario.
The rock legend Mercury passed away in 1991 but would surely approve of his living feline tribute. At one point, Mercury owned 10 cats himself, allotting each a bedroom at his London mansion.
The singer’s longtime assistant, Peter Freestone, recalls Mercury calling home from hotels around the world to check in with his cats. Longtime friend Mary Austin would hold the receiver up so the cats could hear their owner’s voice. And of course Mercury would ensure every cat received gifts and treats on Christmas morning.
